Claiming that Social Darwinism and racialist ideologies are only created to validate, explain, and justify ethnic superiority and to repress others, Vasconcelos attempts to refute these theories and goes on to recognize his words as being an ideological effort to improve the cultural morale of a "depressed race" by offering his optimistic theory of the future development of a cosmic race. As he explains in his literary work, armies of people would then go forth around the world professing their knowledge. Vasconcelos continues to say that the people of the Iberian regions of the Americas that is to say, the parts of the continent colonised by Portugal and Spain have the territorial, racial, and spiritual factors necessary to initiate the "universal era of humanity". It originally referred to a movement by Mexican intellectuals during the s who pointed out that so-called "Latin" Americans have the blood of all the world's so-called "races": European, Asian-descended native Americans, and Africans, thereby transcending the peoples of the " Old World ".

Of course one of the supplementers at page refers to these travel notes in making a point and even quotes them, but then says on page they are not included in the present edition because they are not important!
Otherwise a good read to see what has been appropriated and co-opted by those that use it to engage in identity color of my skin politics.
The Cosmic Race is a historic text that should be in the personal library of undergraduate and graduate students of Latin America. This edition by John Hopkins University press presents the complete essay in original Spanish and in English. The English translation is fairly good. I strongly recommended it. Got it as a gift and they really didn't like it. Vasconcelos gives to the reader a side of history that is not generally taught in our modern school systems.
It is a must reading for any Latino student who wants to know more about Latino history than is taught in school. You other reviewers must have overlooked some parts. On the first page it says: "The mission of the Ibero American Race" The book is talking about existing Latinos, there is no plan to absorb other races in his "cosmic race", the plan is to exclude them and let them die off.
