Database :. Mycobacterium leprae-induced demyelination: a model for early nerve degeneration.. The molecular events that occur at the early phase of many demyelinating neurodegenerative diseases are unknown.
A recent demonstratation of rapid demyelination and axonal injury induced by Mycobacterium leprae provides a model for elucidating the molecular events of early nerve degeneration which might be common to neurodegenerative diseases of both infectious origin and unknown etiology. The identification of the M. Mechanism of nerve destruction in tuberculoid-borderline leprosy.. The ultrastructural changes in radial cutaneous nerve biopsies from 3 tuberculoid and 14 tuberculoid-borderline patients were studied.
In tuberculoid leprosy the nerve parenchyma was almost entirely replaced by tuberculoid granuloma. In nerves from borderline-tuberculoid leprosy many axons showed segmental demyelination and Wallerian degeneration. The nerve tissue was gradually replaced by proliferating collagen fibrils and inflammatory granulomata. Schwann cells were surrounded and occasionally infiltrated by lymphocytes and macrophages. It was suggested that "sensitized Schwann cells" were the target of a hypersensivity reaction resulting in their degeneration or death which in turn produced segmental demyelination or Wallerian degeneration.
Peripheral nerve involvement in leprosy: quantitative histologic aspects.. Nerve biopsies in three lepromatous and three dimorphous leprosy patients are reported.
Bacilli were found in all three lepromatous nerves, and in one dimorphous nerve. Bacilli were present in cutaneous nerve twigs in all six patients. Myelinated fiber counts were severly reduced in four patients. Large fibers were affected to a greater extent than small fibers.
Evidence of widespread segmental demyelination with remyelination was present. Wallerian degeneration was not found. Schwann cell involvement with subsequent segmental demyelination appears to be an important event in the pathogenesis os leprous neuritis. Pathology of ther peripheral nerves in leprosy: report of a case.. Peripheral nerve trunks were examined from a case of lepromatous leprosy.
The causes of this mixed pattern of damage may involve both a direct effect of the bacilli on nerve fibres and various epiphenomena. Subversion of Schwann cells and the leper's bell.. Contact-dependent demyelination by mycobacterium leprae in the absence of immune cells..
