Nov 06, Paul Kerschen rated it really liked it. Many later stories are missing, an especial shame because they get more haunting as they go.

It starts with that thirties Spanish-American sense of both author and milieu finding their feet, an immediate talent for evoking the dreamland and some uncertainty about what to do with it. It works, of course; the broad view of life anchors the mystery of death. The author translated both these short novels herself.

The female protagonists of each novel are upper-class women with rich, lyrical, and in the case of House of Mist , fairy tale-saturated inner lives. Well, the protagonist of The Shrouded Woman is dead, but this is pre-magical realism, so she still has an inner life.

A lovely yet difficult-to-keep-straight mix of characters appears in both novels, and this is also reminiscent of a lot of more recent magical realist work I have read. I was taking this prescription cough medicine while reading this book and I remember one night almost drowning in the lush prose of the early chapters of The Shrouded Woman.

I had no idea what was going on in the book and never really got the characters completely straight in my head as I continued to read it, but that doesn't matter, right? Bombal would have wanted it that way. There are some books everyone can read as good writing, but strictly that.

You see the meaning, the metaphors, the allusions, and you understand the story, but other than that the story doesn't speak to you. It is well-written, one understands its importance, but that is all. There are other stories that are made for pure enjoyment; they hold little or no meaning or literary elements, but they're enjoyable - the quick-reads that dominate most younger fiction or the fiction on airport bookshelves There are some books everyone can read as good writing, but strictly that.

Then there are stories, be them poetry or books, that can speak to you at any point in your life, from any background, or emotion. These stories are what I find to be the gems of literature, the stories that change their influence on you with each time you read them.

They speak to you, and they still contain the structure, principles, and elements needed for something to become literary and not just another work of fiction. I have yet to read the House of Mist, but I feel like the Shrouded Woman is one of these stories that simply work well.

I really enjoyed House of Mist- it reminded me a lot of later novels with similar themes by other Chilean writers such as Isabel Allende, but obviously Bombal began these traditions. The Shrouded Woman was hard to get through, partially because of the confusing dialog.

I know that was part of the narrative structure for the novel, but at times it was hard to follow, and sometimes the translation was poor. However, I loved the concept of Ana Maria's last hours on earth, watching her loved ones pa I really enjoyed House of Mist- it reminded me a lot of later novels with similar themes by other Chilean writers such as Isabel Allende, but obviously Bombal began these traditions.

However, I loved the concept of Ana Maria's last hours on earth, watching her loved ones pay their last respects and hearing their perspective through the narrative. When Ana Maria is finally laid to rest, the novel shines in its descriptive abilities and Bombal's imaginative telling of the final death. The last page of the novel is one of those that will stick with me, like some of Anais Nin's or other descriptive storytellers who excel at naming emotions one didn't know they had.

Jan 07, Ronnie rated it it was amazing Shelves: classics , great-surprise , women , latam. Jan 20, Yoyin rated it it was ok.

The Shrouded Woman: Life is a series of back and forth emotions. Though she does not believe in God, she keeps a heavenly picture, the same way that she keeps Sophia in her memory. As Helga longs for Daniel and as her cousin, Teresa, always stands between their love, as Teresa longs for David, and later as Helga longs for the man in her dreams, Landa.

The strength in love is found through fantasy and dreams. Love and obsession obscure and create an inner reality for Helga: a reality that is often magical, surreal, and mysterious.

Adding to the fact that these two stories focus deeply on the existence of a man and a woman relying on it, and the fact that I am a feminist AND a gay one at that, I loved these. I recommend this book if you want to see some realistic angst.
