Driving through Parveen Shakir Road in Islamabad, one is taken aback by the harmony of the quiet road and the beautiful trees that surround it. Many young people today are not aware of Parveen Shakir, or the monumental contribution she made within Urdu Literature. It is important to revisit her work, especially during current times, in which women are attempting to question, and to some extent, redefine femininity. Parveen Shakir was born in November to a middle-class family in Karachi.

After a nine-year teaching career, she joined the Customs Department in the Civil Service, and became the second secretary of the Federal Board of Revenue.

However, she already entered the world of literature, and written articles in both Urdu and English. Her personal life, however, was deeply tragic. The conservative and patriarchal values her family held prevented them from accepting her as a serious poet, who participated at mushairas poetry recitations and discussed her work with other writers.

Her unhappy marriage to Dr. Naseer Ali, with whom she had one son, ended in a bitter divorce. A friend and fellow contemporary Fatema Hassan had said, Shakir was a victim of conservative and traditional norms. Literary Scholar C. Shakir excelled at both. But more so, she presented unique techniques that allowed the modern female voice space in the traditional male-dominated Urdu Language.

In Khushboo , she wrote the poems as a girl, not a woman, imbued with innocence, playfulness, and charisma. For Shakir, and other female poets of the time, love is mutual agreement that must be upheld. Instead of creating an idea of a lover, love for the female poet is reciprocal, as opposed to how love made them feel.

As she grew as a writer, one can see her progressions of thought, from a young girl thinking about her lover, to a grown woman well aware of the problems that come with working in a bureaucratic milieu. While that may have changed some of her imagery, from nature to more society-related metaphors, it did not affect the clarity with which she writes her romantic poetry.

In To a Victorian Man , she laments how her lover is too preoccupied with rigid customs to express his love for her. She writes,. One can also see the influences of her English Literature degree in her poems. She says,. One from his craze And another helpless for blackmail Barters away his soul. Her work was not just about the female experience, but also about the unique way women perceived societal issues.

It was consciously modern as well as distinctly feminine. Young women today can learn from the way her poetry spread her fragrance of uncompromising femininity.

The Chinese New Year is based on the lunisolar calendar, and so it varies on an annual basis on the Gregorian calendar. This year the Chinese New Year begins on the 25th of January There are twelve animal signs in the Chinese zodiac calendar and the rat is the first one in it, while the pig, the sign for , was the twelfth. The rat is regarded as a symbol of fertility, adaptability, intelligence and wealth. The myth is that the Jade Emperor had a race of thirteen animals and the rat sat on an ox and near the end of the race, jumped off the ox and made a dash to the finishing line, beating all the others.

The pig had stopped for a snack and a snooze, so it came last, while the cat drowned, hence there are twelve animal signs in the Chinese calendar. The celebrations of the Chinese New Year last for two weeks and will end with the Lantern Festival on the 8th of February. It is also known as the Spring Festival. Homes are cleaned thoroughly and red lanterns and other decorations in red put up because the red color is supposed to bring good fortune.

After midnight there are fireworks, to banish evil. Certain superstitions are attached to the start of the Chinese New Year. One the first day people are supposed to avoid doing laundry, cleaning the floor or using scissors, as these activities are supposed to bring all sorts of bad luck for the rest of the year. The largest mass migration takes place during this period, and this year three billion trips are expected during the Chinese New Year for family reunion.

The economy comes to a standstill during this period. The fast expanding network of bullet trains in China has made travel easier and faster for the Chinese on their extensive mainland. Khushboo By Parveen Shakir

Khusbhu is a volume of poetry written by Pakistani poet and columnist Parveen Shakir , and published in The poetry in Khushbu , like most of Shakir's subsequent work, can be divided into two categories: the ghazal [plural: ghazalyaat ], and free verse. Most of Shakir's ghazalyaat contain five to ten couplets, often - though not always - inter-related. The ghazalyaat in Khusbhu heavily rely on metaphors and similes, which are repeatedly and thought-provokingly used to bring force, thoughtfulness and lyricism in her work. Other metaphors Shakir commonly used in the book are mausum [weather] for times, ghulab [rose] for the female lover, titli [butterfly] for a Romeo, hava [wind] for a wayward love, darya [river] for affection, baarish [rain] for affection, and aandhi [storm] for difficulties. The ghazalyaat in Khusbu mainly deal with the feminine perspective on love and romance, and associated themes such as beauty, intimacy, separation, break-ups, distances, distrust and infidelity and disloyalty.
