It was first performed on 9 March at the Neues Theater in Leipzig. Weill was asked by the Baden-Baden music festival committee to write a one act chamber opera for the festival. He ended up writing Mahagonny-Songspiel , sometimes known as Das kleine Mahagonny , a concert work for voices and small orchestra commissioned. The work was written in May , and performed in June. The eleven numbers, which include the "Alabama Song" and "Benares Song", were duly incorporated into the full opera as Weill worked through summer and autumn on the libretto.

Here, everyone is free to do as they please — binge, booze, make love or war; the only sin is to have no money. In the end, Mahagonny goes up in flames. Historical background Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny was first staged towards the end of the progressive Weimar Republic. Directed by Ivo van Hove , this production incorporates video projections by Tal Yarden , with stage and lighting design by Van Hove's regular scenographer Jan Versweyveld. In this production, he leads the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.
