Reich, former Secretary of Labor and author of Locked in the Cabinet In this delightfully written primer, Heilbroner and Thurow sweep away the debris of economic theory to expose the political and social choices lying just below it. At last, a patient but not condescending, detailed but not recondite, conversational but not glib discussion of the factors and terms that any reader of the daily newspaper needs to understand. Economics Explained : Everything You Need to Know About How the Economy Works and Where It's Going
Books on economics abound. Most of them have two purposes. They tell you how to make a great deal of money--in the stock market, in real estate, in gold; or they tout some kind of economic salvation--less government or more government, less regulation or more regulation, less capitalism, more capitalism. There is one overwhelming problem with both kinds of books. They don't work.
The style is fitting for a rudimentary easy-reading introduction, and going by instinct, Economics Explained presents the basics of what one should look for in future studies in economics. The information presented is a whirlwind tour that covers, though in a limited way, the highlights of all areas of market systems. Starting out by knowing nothing about economy except, of course, a few phrases like, "supply and demand," and a few basic concepts such as how different types of companies are structured and how their stocks work , I did learn some fundamental concepts from Economics Explained that will be invaluable in my future studies. From the information I gathered from Economics Explained , here is the economy as I understand it now:. This is not a term to be taken for granted, because there are other systems besides free market systems. The market system is a recent invention. Heilbroner and Thurow explain, however, that the feudal system was not a market system for many reasons.
This new edition is about these disturbing things: a trend toward inequality of incomes, the appearance of a new "globalized" capitalism, the "specter" of inflation. As before, Robert Heilbroner and Lester Thurow treat these problems in language that seeks to make clear their causes and treatments. In this straightforward, highly accessible reference, Heilbroner and Thurow -- two of America's most respected and articulate economists -- offer all the economics essential for becoming an effective investor, a savvy business decision maker, or simply an informed member of society. Economics is a necessary understanding for our current world. Brilliant book. It really helped me understand economics better. Heilbroner is a genius!
